Digital economy refers to a new way of doing business, by using information technologies (IT) such as the internet to conduct commerce, the flow of information and data, online collaboration, marketing, sales, advertising, and much more.
The digital economy has been enabled by the spread of the internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT).

Economically speaking, these firms' business models are fundamentally different than traditional companies' in that their foundation is online, as opposed to in shops or factories. This allows for increased economies of scale, economies of scope, and use of The Long Tail.

Companies which produce hardware or physical products to be shipped, but may be high-tech are generally not regarded as being at the core of the digital economy. They are the enablers. Examples include hardware manufactures (from semiconductors to PCs to mobile phones), infrastructure providers (ISPs, network providers), and other high-tech hardware manufacturers or operators.
